About Albas, British Columbia

Albas is a locality in Kamloops Division Yale Land District, British Columbia, Canada. It is classified as a town. Albas is located at 51.2000°N, 119.0167°W.

Albas rests in the quiet reach of the Kamloops Division Yale Land District, cradled against the steep, wooded slopes that define the edge of Shuswap Lake. It lies 58.3 km north-north-east of Salmon Arm, BC (from Salmon Arm, BC: bearing 17°T), and is situated 5.9 km south-west of Seymour Arm. The light here settles heavily against the Long Ridge at dusk, turning the water into a dark, polished stone that reflects the stillness of the surrounding forest. Beneath the canopy, the air carries a crisp, mineral edge, sharpened by the proximity of the Seymour River which moves steadily through the valley six kilometers away. Even the distant, cold presence of the Bourne Glacier, thirty-three kilometers off, seems to influence the way the wind pulls down from the high country to stir the needles of the cedar and hemlock. History in Albas is marked by the remnants of early logging operations that once relied on the deep water of the lake to move timber toward distant mills. The economy of the region shifted long ago from those intensive industrial efforts to a quieter existence defined by the seasonal cycles of the land. Today, the pace of life follows the slow, deliberate work of maintenance and the stewardship of the rugged terrain. Those who spend their days here find a distinct satisfaction in the solitude, where the only movement is the occasional drift of a boat across the surface or the shifting shadow cast by the ridge as the sun slips behind the peaks.
